Training Overview

This training will provide knowledge, skills and strategies for engaging families in an authentic and sustainable way. The over-arching themes are: assessing readiness for family engagement; use of effective communication with colleagues, families and youth; use of outreach and engagement strategies for families. The facilitators bring a fresh approach to forming partnerships with families that support healthy and positive youth development.

Training Objectives

By the end of this training, participants will be able to do the following:

  • Foster leadership and readiness among colleagues and team members for family engagement;
  • Practice skills in building authentic relationships with and among families;
  • Identify and employ tools and strategies for positive communication with parents and teens; and
  • Develop an action plan for family engagement.


Grantees should plan to arrive on Monday, August 6th, and depart after the conclusion of the training on Wednesday, August 8th, or on Thursday, August 9th. The training will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m. each day. Grantees should plan to be in attendance for the entirety of the training. A certificate of attendance will not be provided to participants who do not complete the final session of the training.

Who Should Attend

This training will benefit any grantee and sub-awardee staff that have an interest in learning about engaging parents and caregivers in adolescent pregnancy prevention work. The training material is applicable for all staff roles, including management and front-line staff.

If you have any questions about specific staff attendance for your grantee agency, please contact your Project Officer. Grantees may register up to 2 representatives from their grant program for the August training as long as their current, approved budget permits. Should they wish to bring more than 2 representatives, grantees must contact their Project Officer. Please note that registration is limited to 75 participants on a first come, first served basis.

A Note for Past Attendees

Priority will be given to grantees who did not send two staff or sub-awardee staff to the November 2017 or March 2018 topical trainings. Grantees who have already sent two staff or sub-awardee staff to the last two topical trainings will be automatically placed on a wait list. If there is still space available by July 3, they will be released from the wait list in the order in which they registered and notified that they are successfully registered for the training. Registration is limited to 75 participants on a first come, first served basis.
