Training Overview

This interactive, skill-building training will provide grantees with the latest information on adolescent reproductive health issues with a focus on physical, emotional, mental, and social impact of sex. The training will include facilitators with expertise in providing youth with medically accurate information. Grantees will have an opportunity to build knowledge and skills for confidently answering "sensitive questions" about contraceptive use and STI prevention. The training will also explore guidelines around boundaries, self-disclosures, and trauma-informed care. Additionally, grantees will receive information on how to explain the benefits of not having sex without sending unintended negative messages to youth.

Training Objectives

By the end of this training, participants will be able to do the following:

  • Provide medically accurate information to youth about STI prevention and contraceptive methods based upon current research;
  • Confidently answer sensitive questions posed by youth on sexual health, STIs, and contraceptives;
  • Identify positive and negative abstinence messages conveyed to youth in sexual health education programming; and
  • Develop and share affirming messages about the benefits of delaying sexual activity.

Grantees should plan to arrive on Monday, March 19th, and depart after the conclusion of the training on Wednesday, March 21st, or on Thursday, March 22nd. The training will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m. each day. Grantees should plan to be in attendance for the entirety of the training. A certificate of attendance will not be provided to participants who do not complete the final session of the training.

Who Should Attend

This training will benefit any grantee and sub-awardee staff that have an interest in learning the latest information on adolescent reproductive health issues. The training material is applicable for all staff roles, including management and front-line staff.

If you have any questions about specific staff attendance for your grantee agency, please contact your Project Officer. Grantees may register up to 2 representatives from their grant program for the March training as long as their current, approved budget permits. Should they wish to bring more than 2 representatives, grantees must contact their Project Officer. Please note that registration is limited to 75 participants on a first come, first served basis.

A Note for Past Attendees

This year, FYSB would like to prioritize grantees that wanted to attend in 2017 but were not able to because the training reached capacity. Grantees that attended the training in 2017 and would also like to attend this year are strongly encouraged to send a staff person that did not attend in 2017. Grantees that attended the training in 2017 and would like to send the same person to the training in 2018 to continue strengthening their skills may do so.

Please register for the Beyond the Basics: Updates and Trends in Adolescent Reproductive Health In-Person Topical Training by February 28, 2018. If training slots are still available on February 28th, waitlisted grantees will be contacted with details for training registration.
